This is my first figurative based on Italian Renaissances Technique done more or less like the Flemish technique but with no Dead layer instead this one uses a vary detailed and completely value accurate drawing an umber under oil painting done vary realistically with a vardagri layer "Green" its an inspired copy of an original done by Alexander Luis Reani 1868 I've been intensely interested in religious art of the Italian masters and though Raeni lived a good 300 years later when I saw it I knew he was of the same mind set his painting differs in that its much more realistically painted and there's greater tension. maybe some day I'll be able to get that good but for the level I'm at I feel pretty good about it plus his is in vary bad shape having cracked and discolored so it was hard to interpret literally.

A mixture of oil painting , Titanium white and talcum powder as the inert ingredient. I found it a lot easier to paint on much better to sand the surface was prepared to an egg shell finish in 4 coats sanding in between. I prepped the canvas with hide glue.

William Stout: Prehistoric Life Murals

We live in a wonderfully weird world, in which life has taken forms more spectacularly bizarre and varied than the imaginings of any fantasy or concept artist (which, given the talents of many of those amazing artists, is saying something).

oil painting has provided us with a record of some of the wildest experiments of the past, most notable among them might be the dinosaurs, which have captured the public’s imagination since the first artistic reconstructions of them in the 19th century.

But there are many eras of geologic time and restless evolutional experimentation in nature’s vast fossil scrapbook, from long before the dinosaurs as well as the epochs between their demise and our short time on the stage.

William Stout, a multi-talented artist who I have written about previously, has created murals of several periods of prehistoric life for The Houston Museum of Natural Science, Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom, and the San Diego Natural History Museum (see my previous post on William Stout’s murals for the San Diego Natural History Museum).

Flesk Publications, a terrific independent art book publisher that I have also written about before, has published a lavish, beautifully designed and printed book devoted to displaying all of Stout’s prehistoric life murals.

oil painting is 144 pages in nicely large horizontal coffee-table format (10×12″, 25x30cm), crafted with with Flesk’s usual meticulous attention to quality and detail, and features reproductions not only from the finished murals, but from the preliminary half-size paintings submitted to the museum paleontologists for approval before the final paintings ere undertaken, as well as the sketches on which they were based and even some of the briefly notated thumbnail sketches that preceded those.

It’s a general practice to tint a color with white, thus making it lighter. And shading a color with black to darken it. But this doesn’t work all of the time. See more details below.

The Masters usually used a very limited palette. This was due to many factors, cost, time in grinding their own, or having apprentices doing this, and availability of the raw compounds or their own previous training or preferences.

In today’s world, access to different oil painting is mind boggling. So where do you start?

Well, if you’ve been following some of my lessons here, and you’ve started a work, you’ll know I begin with an imprimatura, (a coated pre-colored canvas) of a yellow ochre/olive toned canvas. Then the first and second Umber underlayer using burnt umber as the only paint. From here we go into the dead or gray layer which uses a prepared black, white, and 3 to 5 midtones.

Here is your color mixing guide list of paints so far:


•My prepared black will have 2 parts Ivory or Mars Black,
•1 part Burnt Umber, and
•1/8 part Prussian Blue.
You can experiment with making a very deep rich black using just Prussian blue and burnt umber.

For my Imprimatura I use

•Prepared Black,
•Yellow Ochre,
•Titanium White, and a touch of
•Prussian Blue
to create an olive hue. The lightness or darkness is depending on the average tonality of the entire piece. This is found by squinting your eyes and getting the average brightness of the largest lit area in the set up.

I have found Flake White, and Zinc White will not cover (not enough opacity) during the dead layer. I have also found that Permalba is a very good blend of Titanium and Zinc white that does cover well in the dead layer

Girl Wearing Hijab

Hi I have done this painting of "Girl Wearing Hijab" on a "16 x 20" inches canvas, using oil painting as my medium.
I first sketched the subject on my canvas using charcoal, and blended in the base colors with a thin mixture of oils, basically using olive green for the exposed area of the face and dark blue and green for the background and head piece.
When that was dry I started painting from left to right firstly using a shade of burgandy, oil painting scarlet red and ultramarine blue. I painted the head piece using a mixture of viridian,emerald green, yellow ochre, orange and some yellow.
The skin tone on the face was done mixing together some burnt sienna, yellow ochre, and zinc titanjum white. The darker areas I used some burnt umber. I gently blended the colors with a nylon flat brush and in some areas I just used my finger. The eyes were done in white, ultramarine blue, pinch of burnt umber, and black.

The alla prima oil painting process

oil painting is usually done on a smaller canvas and with a colored ground to save time.

An oil-rich medium is also usually incorporated to allow the entire painting to be worked throughout the session with none of it becoming sticky, or tacky due to premature drying. The medium is used to keep the paint from drying, but not so much as to thin it for glazing. Most color mixtures are opaque as glazing is not incorporated.

Large bristle brushes are typically used as the paint is fairly heavy and thick. As the work is refined, more softer synthetic nylons and smaller sizes are utilized for final blending and detail work.

Alla Prima oil painting process:

1. A loose under-drawing of charcoal, chalk or even thinned paint is done over the colored ground.

2. Key color and focal areas are laid in firstly. These are usually your lighter, and more opaque paint.

3. Darker tones are then added, these being again opque and heavy paint. Background is also done at the same time.

4. After your main elements are blocked in details are now beginning using impasto strokes and thickly applied paints.

5. "Tonking" tapping of a rag or paper, to the canvas to remove excess paint where needed. This is like blotting ink from paper. No rubbing is done, just a blotting motion to remove paint that is impeding further work. Too thick a paint in an area that you need to go back into will make mud.

6. After this you can begin blending as you now have paint blocked into all areas of the canvas in the proportions you deem necessary.

7. Final details are then put into just your focal points. As the entire painting is still quite wet, the use of the mahl stick will most likely be necessary.

8. Final highlights and a signature and you're done!

Now, I know it's hard to understand what you have just read without pictures, but have no fear. It's one of those priority things in getting the images on the camera to the computer kinda thing. I'm also having a decision crisis on what exactly to paint. To prepare oil painting , first bring the cool water to a boil in the kettle. Once the water has started to boil, pour it on a 8-ounce cup filled with 1 teaspoon of ceylon tea leaves. Allow the mix to soak for about 3 to 5 minutes. Then strain the tea and drink. Sugar, lemon, honey and milk are often added to taste.
