The Air Force 1 (or AF1) athletic shoe is a product of Nike, Inc. created by designer Bruce Kilgore. This was the first basketball shoe to use the Nike Air technology.


The name is a reference to Air Force One, the plane that carries the President of the United States. The shoes are sold in three different styles. The two most common are low-cut and mid-top. Nike also produces a high-top model, which is usually harder to find. The mid-top and high-top Air Force 1’s come with a velcro-securable strap; the mid-top strap is secured to the shoe while the high-top’s strap is movable and removable. Although the shoe comes in many different colors and color schemes, the most common Air Force 1’s sold are solid white (often referred to as “white-on-white”) and solid black colors.


Another identifying characteristic of an Air Force 1 shoe is a small, removable medallion that is secured to the bottom of the laces but has holes on either side so it can be removed by sliding it off of the shoe lace. The medallion is engraved with the inscription “AF-1″, with the year “‘82″ inscribed below it, and has historically been made out of a silver-colored metal (perhaps pewter). Its original design was more circular, but after a redesign for the Air Force 1’s 25th anniversary in 2008 the medallion is now rectangular. (The redesign also involved encasing the inscription in white plastic; that was discarded in favor of the original medallion material.)


The Air Force 1 was produced in 1982 and discontinued the following year. It was re-released in 1986 with the modern italic Nike logo with a Swoosh on the bottom on the back of the shoe. Little has changed to the Air Force One since its creation in 1982, although the original stitching on the side panels is no longer present in modern versions of the shoe. Since then, over 1,700 color variations have been produced, bringing in an estimated 800 million USD/year in revenue. The selling of the Air Force Ones online by certain retailers is prohibited by Nike who has restricted supply of the sneaker.


Nike Air Force 1s were originally considered the favored shoe of inner-city youth, then hip hop artists and streetball players. Rapper Nelly and his group, St. Lunatics, collaborated on a 2002 single entitled “Air Force Ones” about the shoes. As a performance shoe, the AF1 is still used for street play as well as for professional play. NBA players Jerry Stackhouse (who now wears Adidas) and Rasheed Wallace have worn AF1s on court.


The Air Force 2 shoe introduced in 1987 is a newer variation of the original. The shoe is a typical flat-soled, casual-wear sneaker that can be made in many different variations of colors. Also, Air Force 2s were re-released internationally in the early 2000s. They can be made in either the low-cut or high-top style. The shoe can be custom made in any color, but typically it has either a white or black based background color with almost any color used to fill in the Nike Swoosh and back heel.


The Air Force 3 shoe introduced in 1988 was the most popular version of Air Force series. It was worn by many basketball players at the time. The Air Force III was more rugged looking and more durable than the previous two versions. The original colorway was white/medium grey/black, however several other colors were introduced shortly after. An actual “Air FORCE” logo was introduced on this model as well, with an image of half of a basketball on the tongue. This logo would be used on the rest of the Air Force series. The Air Force III was re-issued in 2006 in very limited edition of colorways of the high top, and several colorways for the low top version.


The Air Force STS (also known as Air Force 4 or Air Force IV) was introduced in 1989. It was regularly worn by David Robinson in his rookie year. The Air Force STS features leopard print and is also slightly higher than the first 3 versions of the Air Force series.


The Air Force 5 was introduced in 1990. The Air Force V was the first model to make the airbag visible on the side heels of the shoe. The most popular colorway was white/medium grey/black/orange. Just like the previous version it was slightly higher than the first 3 versions. This was also the last original Air Force model to be made.


In 2007, for the 25th anniversary of the original Air Force 1, Nike created the Air Force XXV, which got its inspiration from original Air Force 1 invented in 1982. A commercial for the Air Force XXV included LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, Rasheed Wallace, Tony Parker, Jermaine O’Neal, Amar’e Stoudemire, Chris Paul, and Paul Pierce, featuring the music of Juelz Santana (the Second Coming).Since its introduction, many different Air Force 1s have been designed or inspired by celebrities and athletes.


In 2009, Nike created Air Force 09, an update of the original shoe. The shoe comes in a solid black or white.

Normally air force ones shoes up to now has been what I can best call a ‘Third Person’ experience. We did not see ourselves in the AR environment. We saw someone or something else. So it was like a movie that was designed by someone else, with actors, and we just observed it. Cool yes; Augmented Reality was something magical that happened near us but to others or to the environment ‘out there’ as seen through our mobile phone viewfinder. This new idea is I believe the world’s first use of AR in the first person, where the AR benefit is seen directly upon the viewer himself/herself. So it’s a ‘first person’ Augmented Reality experience, air force ones shoes a bit like ‘first person’ shooting games and race car driving games.


Adidas AR T-Shirt

I know AR is a difficult topic to try to explain without video and very cumbersome only in words. I will start today with this written description. But please read this verbal description of this magical experience in mobile marketing, and if it’s not clear to you, please leave comments and I will of course respond to the comments and also try to explain more where there may be confusion.


So here is how it worked. Adidas in Singapore [and four other Asian cities] ran a campaign with three primary interests. First, to drive ‘foot-fall’ into their stores i.e. get visitors. Secondly to promote their new line of very cool colorful T-shirts. And thirdly to also drive individual store-visitor sales spending up per visit. They set a very lofty target wanting to get some store-visitors to breach a 500 Singapore dollar spending level [360 US dollars] which is obviously spending much more than just buying one or two Adidas T-shirts.


An example of Augmented Reality T-ShirtSo they created a new user-experience asking prospective Adidas customers to come and try their new augmented reality T-shirt experience. The campaign ran in the local newspaper which included a picture of the Adidas logo. The customer was asked to take a picture of the logo with their cameraphone, and bring that image to the store. For those Singapore customers who might not have a cameraphone [something that is becoming very rare in the city where air force ones shoes already has a 3G mobile subscription], they could also cut the image out from the newspaper and bring the paper cutting version of the Adidas logo to the store. At the big Adidas store in the big shopping mall, there were more posters inviting visitors to take part.


When the customer came in to the store, they found a digital mirror. A digital mirror uses a camera and flat screen display, showing you your image just like a mirror would. The picture obviously is ‘mirrored’ so if you move your left hand, the camera switches the view, so in the digital mirror you see yourself but as if your right hand had moved – exactly like a mirror. But the benefit in a digital mirror is that we can add digital elements from taking pictures to various virtual reality elements, including augmented reality.


So there is some software in the digital mirror at the Adidas store, which detects the Adidas logo in the cameraphone screen [or the paper printed version of the Adidas logo]. Then the digital mirror would project an overlay image, super-imposed over the ‘mirror image’ of the person in front of the camera. Where we held our cameraphone and the Adidas logo, there appears instantly one of the new Adidas T-shirts.


But this is of course already ‘contoured’ so it looks like ’somebody’ is ’wearing’ that T-shirt [but has his or her head and arms cut off]… When this image is moved over your body, your head and arms show underneath the T-shirt, and it looks just like you are wearing that T-shirt. Beautiful, magical. If the T-shirt is ‘crooked’, so for example your right shoulder is visible underneath the T-shirt, then you just move your cameraphone a little bit in front of the digital mirror, and it will adjust the T-shirt. Very easy, simple and intuitive.


Now, for one T-shirt this might seem excessive technology to ‘try one T-shirt’ but now we get the fun of AR and digital. Of course Adidas had created a whole series of cool T-shirts in funky colors and designs. Where if they were hanging on the rack in the store, not every visitor to the store bothers to look through all T-shirts. And not all will want to ‘bother’ to try on T-shirts. But now whenever you lowered your cameraphone down out of view of the digital mirror, and then brought it up again, the system swapped the next T-shirt for you. So just by flicking your camera out of view and back, you had the next T-shirt to try on.


It was magical. You could instantly try on new T-shirts. By tilting your cameraphone the image tilted in the mirror so you could see the T-shirt ’move’ in the digital mirror just like in the real world if you actually bothered to try on the T-shirt. And to replace it with the next, just flick your cameraphone out and back. The same Adidas logo still on your phone screen, now the digital image had replaced the T-shirt with the next. Instant ‘test-drive’ of every new T-shirt in the spring fashion catalog, without the hassles of the changing booth. Magical!


I heard a little bit of the success rate when my friend Colin Miles of air force ones shoes presented in Singapore. The users of the AR-enhanced digital mirror were so delighted many actually exclaimed their surprise and amazement out loud [Colin showed video of some actual customer experiences in the store]. We don’t usually hear that when clothing store visitors see themselves in the normal mirrors. Better than that, 75% of all who used the digital mirror liked the experience so much; they took a digital picture of themselves in the mirror wearing one of the new Adidas T-shirts.


As to the 500 Singapore dollar purchasing experience? Adidas set up a related offer of exclusive tickets to a major rock concert in Singapore where anyone who made more than 500 dollar purchase at one visit would get the custom invitation by Adidas to the rock concert. 74 people who visited the Adidas store to try on the augmented reality T-shirts also ended up spending over 500 dollars on their shopping visit. Adidas were extremely happy with the campaign.


Start of Something Big

This is evidence of how much the innovation in advertising is starting to appear in mobile. It is a wonderful application of Augmented Reality for marketing, and to me, I think we’ve crossed over into a new area of AR based marketing, from ‘third person AR’ to ‘first person AR’. Obviously we, the consumers, think the world’s most important person or brand is ‘me’. That is why direct mail two decades ago wanted to send junk mail to us but by personalizing it by using our names. Now we get to see ourselves inside an AR experience. This is why I call it ‘First Person AR’. Now it is ‘me’ who is experiencing AR. Very very cool. Congrats to Adidas and air force ones shoes.

Nike Air Max 1 – Turbo Green

Today has been dominated by Air Maxes as we have seen two great colorways of the Air Max 1 and Air Max 90. Well here we get another fresh colorway of the Air Max 1 as this one comes in the famous turbo green colorway. This Air Max 1 features quite a bit of color. Turbo green is put into use on the mudguard, Nike swoosh, top eyelet surround, and heel and tongue Nike branding. Yellow is seen on the inner lining and top eyelet while grey is placed on the heel and side panel. Nike decides to finish off the Air Max 1 with a clean white midsole and a black outsole. From the images, we can see the show sports an upper dominated my metallic silver with the sports red playing the back seat. Nike’s Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II, CTR360 Maestri, Total90 Laser III and Tiempo Legend III all feature new performance upper to improve on-field visibility and a reengineered outsole to deliver lightweight performance for every style of player.


Nike designers have reduced the weight of each boot so players can perform at their best. Lightweight construction, intricate engineering, carbon-enforced strength and high contrast colors distinguish the boots.


The high contrast colors (Metallic Mach Purple and Total Orange) are engineered together for enhanced visibility. For a footballer this unique combination is designed to increase visual performance enabling them to quickly spot their teammates and execute a game-changing pass.


“At Nike, we have a relentless focus on product innovation to give athletes a real competitive edge and deliver the best products in the world,” said Andrew Caine, Nike Design Director for Football Footwear. “The Nike Elite Series delivers lightweight and highly engineered boots for the leading players in the world to perform on the biggest stage this summer”.


Lightweight performance and enhanced on-field visibility

Research shows that the average energy expenditure of an elite player is over 1,000 Kilo Calories per game for a 75kg player. Reducing the weight carried by players helps reduce the energy needed over the course of 90 minutes. By delivering lightweight supercharged performance to all four of Nike’s statement level boots the goal is to give players an edge in the final stages of a game.


Super-strong, lightweight carbon fiber plates mean the Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II is 5% lighter. The CTR360 Maestri is 19% lighter. Both the Total90 Laser III and Tiempo Legend III are 16% lighter.


With nearly four years of game analysis, biomechanical studies and player testing the design team and Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL) collaborated to understand how to deliver new product innovations including incorporating visual performance benefits into boot design.


An average person’s vision is 99% peripheral. Under 1% is considered foveal, or focused vision. To spark increased focus of peripheral vision Nike designers analyzed the color spectrum to identify two, high-contrast colors, so that when a player is running with these boots the colors trigger a stimulus to rapidly tune peripheral vision. Mach Purple and Total Orange provided the perfect blend to create this effect and performance advantage.


The Elite Series is available to players at all levels and also incorporates Nike Football+ which features exclusive insider access to the world’s best coaches, players and teams for total game improvement. Nike Football+ Master Series builds expertise in Control, Accuracy and Speed through elite insights and pro training. This includes a special Elite Series signature move from Atletico Madrid and Argentina star Sergio Aguero that will launch at the end of May.

BEAVERTON, Ore. (May 3, 2010) – NIKE, Inc. (NYSE:NKE) today unveiled its supercharged Nike Elite Series football boots providing new levels of performance. Nike’s Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II, CTR360 Maestri, Total90 Laser III and Tiempo Legend III all feature new performance upper to improve on-field visibility and a reengineered outsole to deliver lightweight performance for every style of player.


Nike designers have reduced the weight of each boot so players can perform at their best. Lightweight construction, intricate engineering, carbon-enforced strength and high contrast colors distinguish the boots.


The high contrast colors (Metallic Mach Purple and Total Orange) are engineered together for enhanced visibility. For a footballer this unique combination is designed to increase visual performance enabling them to quickly spot their teammates and execute a game-changing pass.

Lightweight performance and enhanced on-field visibility

Research shows that the average energy expenditure of an elite player is over 1,000 Kilo Calories per game for a 75kg player. Reducing the weight carried by players helps reduce the energy needed over the course of 90 minutes. By delivering lightweight supercharged performance to all four of Nike’s statement level boots the goal is to give players an edge in the final stages of a game.


Super-strong, lightweight carbon fiber plates mean the Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II is 5% lighter. The CTR360 Maestri is 19% lighter. Both the Total90 Laser III and Tiempo Legend III are 16% lighter.


With nearly four years of game analysis, biomechanical studies and player testing the design team and Nike Sports Research Lab (NSRL) collaborated to understand how to deliver new product innovations including incorporating visual performance benefits into boot design.


An average person’s vision is 99% peripheral. Under 1% is considered foveal, or focused vision. To spark increased focus of peripheral vision Nike designers analyzed the color spectrum to identify two, high-contrast colors, so that when a player is running with these boots the colors trigger a stimulus to rapidly tune peripheral vision. Mach Purple and Total Orange provided the perfect blend to create this effect and performance advantage.


The Elite Series is available to players at all levels and also incorporates Nike Football+ which features exclusive insider access to the world’s best coaches, players and teams for total game improvement. BP Is Criticized Over Oil Spill, but U.S. Missed Chances to Act

NEW ORLEANS — As oil edged toward the Louisiana coast and fears continued to grow that the leak from a seabed oil well could spiral out of control, officials in the Obama administration publicly chastised BP America for its handling of the spreading oil gusher in the Gulf of Mexico.


Yet a review of the response suggests it may be too simplistic to place all the blame for the unfolding environmental catastrophe on the oil company. The federal government also had opportunities to move more quickly, but did not do so while it waited for a resolution to the spreading spill from BP.


The Department of Homeland Security waited until Thursday to declare that the incident was “a spill of national significance,” and then set up a second command center in Mobile, Ala. The actions came only after the estimate of the size of the spill was increased fivefold to 5,000 barrels a day.


The delay meant that the Homeland Security Department waited until late this week to formally request a more robust response from the Department of Defense, with Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano acknowledging even as late as Thursday afternoon that she did not know if the Defense Department even had equipment that might be helpful.


By Friday afternoon, she said, the Defense Department had agreed to send two large military transport planes to spray chemicals that can disperse the oil while it is still in the Gulf.


Officials initially seemed to underestimate the threat of a leak, just as BP did last year when it told the government such an event was highly unlikely. Rear Adm. Mary E. Landry, the chief Coast Guard official in charge of the response, said on April 22, after the rig sank, that the oil that was on the surface appeared to be merely residual oil from the fire, though she said it was unclear what was going on underwater. The day after, officials said that it appeared the well’s blowout preventer had kicked in and that there did not seem to be any oil leaking from the well, though they cautioned it was not a guarantee.


BP officials, even after the oil leak was confirmed by using remote-controlled robots, expressed confidence that the leak was slow enough, and steps taken out in the Gulf of Mexico aggressive enough, that the oil would never reach the coast.


On Friday, the company drew sharp new criticism from federal officials for not stopping the leak and cleaning up the spill before it reached land. They called the oil company’s current resources inadequate.


“It is clear that after several unsuccessful attempts to secure the source of the leak, it is time for BP to supplement their current mobilization as the slick of oil moves toward shore,” Ms. Napolitano said pointedly.


Geoffrey S. Morrell, deputy assistant secretary of defense, said in a statement that the government would hold BP accountable for the cost of the department’s deployment, which as of Friday night included the Louisiana National Guard to help clean up coastal areas once the oil comes ashore.


Meanwhile, one official at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in a widely distributed warning on Friday, said the oil flow could grow from the current estimate of 5,000 barrels a day to “an order of magnitude higher than that.” The NOAA document, first obtained by The Press-Register in Mobile, was described by an agency spokesman as simply a possibility raised by a staff member, not an official prediction.


Some oil industry critics questioned whether the federal government is too reliant on oil companies to manage the response to major spills, leaving the government unable to evaluate if the response is robust enough.


“Here you have the company that is responsible for the accident leading the response to the crisis,” said Tyson Slocum, director of Public Citizen’s Energy Program. “There is a problem here, and the consequence is clear.”


But it is still the government, in this case the Coast Guard, that has the final say. A law passed a year after the 1989 Exxon Valdez disaster makes the owner of a rig or vessel responsible for cleaning up a spill. But oversight of the cleanup is designated to the Coast Guard, with advice from other federal agencies.


Rear Adm. Robert C. North, retired, who was commander of the Coast Guard’s Eighth District from 1994 to 1996, said that decisions in these situations are made collectively, but that the buck essentially stops with the federal coordinator — in this case, Admiral Landry. “The federal on-scene coordinator is kind of the one individual to say, ‘I think we need to do more’ or ‘That’s adequate,’ ” he said.

It is no accident one of the world’s biggest movie stars, Robert Downey Jr., maintains that notation after his name. The “Iron Man” star is, of course his father’s namesake. But fans may not know that the “Sr.” Downey is a noted indie filmmaker. Once filming began on “Iron Man 2,” the iconic director, Downey Jr. said, was never far from his mind.


“Well, sure, any time your dad is revered,” the 45-year-old actor told MTV News. “I mean, I grew up with people saying, ‘Hey, that’s Bob Downey’s kid’ — and understandably so.”


The actor’s father has a backstory worthy of the big screen: He served in the Army, played minor-league baseball (striking out Yogi Berra in a game), held the title of Golden Gloves boxing champion and was working as an off-Broadway playwright by age 22. In the 1960s, he made a name for himself writing and directing experimental films like “Balls Bluff” and “No More Excuses,” but it was the brilliant 1969 advertising spoof “Putney Swope” (Robert Jr. was 4) that really put him on the map. Thirty years later, he would direct his son in “Hugo Pool,” his last wide-release film.


“He was a great innovator and a heck of a filmmaker,” Downey said of his dad, now 73.


In the “Iron Man” follow-up, Downey’s Tony Stark is similarly grappling with the memory of his father, a respected weapons manufacturer who left his son with vast wealth, power and lots of unanswered questions. “In Tony’s case, it’s really this massive looming shadow of his dad’s posthumous perfection,” Downey said of the plot. “That’s a tough thing for him to live up to.


“The big idea, the theme, was legacy — a double legacy,” he continued. “There’s the legacy that he is fondly attempting to continue, and there’s the legacy that is attempting to be subverted by some old foes. And then there’s the legacy that he has no idea about, which, of course, the Marvel universe provides.”
